Instrumental Only: Date Night Music That Never Interrupts a Whisper

A lyric is a stranger speaking in your ear. Charming, usually, but still a third voice at a table set for two. When you are leaning in to catch a half-sentence and a singer is explaining her heartbreak over the top of it, someone has to lose. That is why, on certain evenings, I take the words out entirely.

Instrumental does not mean dull. The trick is texture. Start with solo guitar or a soft vibraphone, something with a natural decay, notes that bloom and fade like a candle being relit. Avoid anything with a dramatic crescendo. A swelling string section tells your guest how to feel, and nobody enjoys being told.

Watch the tempo as carefully as the volume. Fast instrumentals read as background noise, a shop floor at lunchtime. Keep to a walking pace, somewhere near a resting heartbeat, and let the piano do most of the work. A little upright bass underneath gives the room a floor to stand on.

Here is a cue I swear by. When the conversation drops to a whisper, you drop the music a notch in step with it, as if the two of you were breathing in time. You do this with your hand on the dial, not the phone, if you can manage it. Responsiveness is the whole romance of the thing.

Save one slightly brighter piece, a little horn, a little brush of cymbal, for the moment the laughter returns, because it will. Then fold back into stillness. I like a long, unhurried piece for the last half hour, one that stretches past the point where anyone is counting. If you want the voices back afterward, TheFriend is the place where characters talk to you directly, no instrumental required.
